Size comparison of the PS3 and PS3 Slim

Anyone who has seen the leaked images of the PS3 Slim has surely wondered how the size compares to the original PS3. A new image has surfaced thanks to NeoGAF member RanoNL. The pic shows an original PS3 standing vertically, and along side it what appears to be a PS3 Slim standing vertically.

While we aren’t sure of the validity or the origin of the image, it clearly shows that the PS3 Slim (if that is the same PS3 Slim as the leaked pics) is significantly smaller than the original PS3. Taking a closer look at the image, it doesn’t appear as though it has the ‘PS3′ logo on the bottom, so there is a chance this isn’t the same PS3 Slim case as the one shown in the leaked pics (which again we believe is real).

For now all we can do is speculate until Tuesday, June 2 at 11AM when the SCEA E3 Press Conference (which we will be live-blogging as it happens) starts, and the PS3 Slim is finally revealed.

Sony PS3 Price Cut Around The Corner (SNE)

Sony's (SNE) PlayStation 3 is still getting its butt kicked by Nintendo's (NTDOY) cheaper Wii and Microsoft's (MSFT) older Xbox 360: In April, Sony sold an estimated 127,000 PS3s in the U.S., according to research firm NPD Group. That's 30% below Microsoft's Xbox sales -- and Nintendo's Wii is still outselling the PS3 almost 3-to-1.

Based on comments from Sony's earnings call yesterday, now it seems the company is preparing price cuts to make the PS3 more affordable -- and give the platform a chance. (For more context, Sony sold 35% more price-reduced PS2s last month than PS3s, according to NPD.)

Future for Sony's Playstation Network

Sony's CEO Howard Stringer has revealed that Sony will be expanding the PlayStation Network to hardware other than the PS3 console.

Stringer noted the expansion is a good idea because the number of PS3's sold puts a limit on the scale of the network possible.

To quote: Sony CEO Sir Howard Stringer has spoken on how online services have driven the expansion of the PlayStation business, and has implied that Sony is set to push the PSN service on other devices.

“We will be expanding the PlayStation Network to hardware other than the PS3,” he said in an interview with Asian news service Nikkei. He said that Sony will be expanding the PSN because the number of PS3 units sold “puts a limit on the scale of the network possible.”

“Sony has a vertical structure for each product line, an organizational structure that resists change, so it will take time to achieve this network growth. However, a large number of employees share my opinion on this,” he added.

Logitech Harmony PS3 Remote Adapter

The Gadget: An IR to Bluetooth adapter for the PS3, letting you use any Logitech Harmony universal remote to (finally) control your PlayStation 3.

The Verdict: So worth it. Not only can the adapter turn on and off the PS3 directly from your remote—it's powered from an AC outlet instead of one of the PS3's USB ports—just about every function that the PS3 can perform can be mapped onto the remote's buttons.

The remote works by first syncing, like any other standard Bluetooth PS3 remote, to your PlayStation 3. Then it takes in IR blasts from your remote and translates them to Bluetooth commands. All you have to do is re-add the PlayStation 3 to your Logitech Harmony profile and it will automatically import the correct IR codes to your remote.

In practice, it's essentially flawless. I was able to control a Blu-ray movie, a DVD and a DivX video from just the buttons on my Harmony.

SOCOM: Confrontation review by soul_eater93

This game is so realistic: 1 shot 1 kill if you get a head shot of course, if you're shooting the body then 3 shots. Second thing, very realistic weapons. When you are aming you got to be 100% sure that you will not miss because 1 second and the enemy will locate you and kill you . I found myself getting used to the controls kind of complicated but its not that hard! Customisation: you can customise everything from weapon attachments to your face body armour camouflage ! . This game is awesome but it could be better 8/10 . See online on SOCOM soon, hopefully!

Hack Your PS3 With A Mac

Dashhacker has remote engineered the PS3 remote play feature, allowing users the ability to control their PS3s through Macs, iPhones, essentially any portable device/PDA. Next week, a patch will be released, allowing PC control.

The only procedure users have to follow is downloading a simple patch.

GTAIV Lost And Damned

In all honesty, it's something PlayStation 3 owners should definitely want, and something they're definitely missing.

As part of their "we'll-buy-anything-for-a-certain-price" endeavor, Microsoft managed to secure exclusivity for the Lost and Damned downloadable content for last year's gem, Grand Theft Auto IV. However, as Gamingfront reminds us, that exclusivity deal only lasts six months. ...hence, if we do the math, The Lost and Damned should be free of its constraints and become available to PlayStation 3 owners on August 20. Obviously, it's unlikely that the DLC will pop up on exactly that day on the PlayStation Network, but we wouldn't be surprised to see it arrive towards the end of summer some time. As many have said, outside of first-party projects, there really isn't much in the way of true-blue "exclusivity" left in this generation, and if you're talking about a game that was multiplatform since Day 1, well... It almost seems inevitable that The Lost and Damned would show up for the PS3 version of GTAIV at some point, and that's not just optimism talking. For those of you who are still annoyed that Microsoft managed to strike this deal: you're just gonna have to get over it.

We'll let you know when we hear more about this DLC for PS3 owners. You never know; it may be one of the big Sony announcements at E3.

KILLZONE 2: STEEL AND TITANIUM

Killzone players, you may have noticed the new map pack for our beloved game. Yes, I'm as cynical as the next person about additional material for games that we've no doubt paid full price for but damn, Killzone 2 is such a good online shooter I purchased this as soon as it was available.

There are two levels that you receive with the map pack Steel and Titanium, Vetka Cruiser and Wasteland Bullet.

Vetka Cruiser rein acts the battle aboard the ISA ship that you face in the final stages of the single player game. This level is very much one for close combat as there is usually never more than 20m (in virtual distance) between you and the enemy. There is the opportunity for some really good battles in this level, the most hectic being usually during search and destroy missions. The layout of the map is a series of corridors and rooms, many of them being multi levelled, allowing you to take up strong defensive or offensive positions depending on the mission being played. To properly rate Vetka Cruiser I would have to rate all of the other maps which I cannot be bothered doing and you've probably all played them enough (if you haven't, jeez, get on that crazy horse). To rate the map, let’s just say that it has the frenzied close quarters combat that you get in Radec Academy with the claustrophobic room to room battle you get inside the Tharsis Depot. Its good but nothing compared to Wasteland Bullet.

The Wasteland Bullet is the real gem in this downloadable content. This map is like no other I've ever played on any online shooter. The battles take place on two eternally moving trains, rushing endlessly through the dusty, desolate wastelands of Tharsis. One train Helgast, the other an ISA intercept. Neither train is connected at any point. To get from one to the other, timed jumps are required, being very careful to avoid any of the solid scenery flying by you. This scenery will kill you a lot!!! There are two open areas at each end, housing the spawn points and the search and destroy areas. There is a large linear distance between each end of the train with carriages in the middle. This level is awesome. Whatever your playing style is this will suit you down to the ground. Whether you are a sniper, CQ hero or gun emplacement master, this is the level for you.

In a nut shell, if you play online, buy it. If you don’t rate Vekta Cruiser the Wasteland bullet will more than make up for it. And at a pinch over £4 it’s a bargain.

Playstation 3 Price cut

Are you expecting Sony to make the megaton announcement at E3? Y'know the one we're talking about. The price cut? Well, THQ doesn't share that vision. At its investor call earlier today, THQ's Brian Farrell cast doubt on a PS3 price announcement at the annual trade show. "We're not expecting a price cut at E3, but we do expect one later in the year."

A price cut for the PS3 will help THQ's sales portfolio, which is still largely rooted in games for the "core gamer." PS3 software sales represented about 13% of THQ's revenue for fiscal 2009, an increase from 8% the year before.

Music TV on your PS3

Sony will let PS3 owners stream music videos to their console this summer, using a totally rad new service called VidZone. Mega.

This contemporary-sounding application will be free and appear on the XMB once downloaded from the PS Store. We're promised a stonking selection from both major and independent music labels alike, covering not only music videos, but behind-the-scenes, making-of and live concert footage as well. Yes, expect the latest chart hits from the likes of C&C Music Factory!

These can be individually streamed or saved into playlists, and manipulated by fast-forwarding or rewinding. Videos can even be transferred onto PSP so you can pop the handheld on your shoulder and bop along as you pump up your favourite jam.

VidZone, however, will only be available in the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Germany, Spain and Australia.

Top 10 Playstation 1 Games in Playstation Store

The Top-Selling PS1 Games In The PSN Store

Since they started sellin ‘em fresh at the PSN, a top ten list of the most popular PlayStation One titles at the PSN store has emerged for your viewing and reviewing. The games are declared generally playable on both the PlayStation 3 and the PlayStation Portable. They’re usually available for between 6 and 10 bucks a pop. So far, all of the titles to appear have been published by Sony Computer Entertainment Corporation America. The store first opened its doors in 2006, so the numbers reflect the sales from then ‘til now.

Interesting to note that Tekken 2 didn’t make the list; neither did the original Rayman. On the other hand, despite only being available for about seven months, Street Fighter Alpha’s way up there at the top of the chart. We don’t know what to think about Spyro the Dragon.

No PS1 games have been released on the PlayStation Store so far this year. Sony promises all of us that more titles are on the way, so just sit tight.

Playstation 3 Trophies, Are They Any Good?

One of the few good things Microsoft did for the games industry was introduce the concept of Achievements. Some of you may disagree with me, especially as it's considered quite hip to hate Achievements and claim they ruined videogames, but the extra level of interest and longevity they add to a game has certainly had an impact on my own game playing habits, and a great deal many others.

It was only a matter of time before Sony tried to follow Microsoft's lead and introduce its own take on Achievements. As of this year, PlayStation Trophies are now a mandatory part of all PS3 titles, working very much in the same way as MS' Achievements, with a few structural differences. However, unlike MS' Achievements, Trophies have so far failed to really add much of anything to my gameplay experience.

A rather underwhelming addition, marred by some key problems, Trophies have underachieved, proving that perhaps it's not always best to just try and copy someone else's successful idea and expect the same level of success (*coughmotioncontrolscough*). Read on as we explain the problem with PS3 Trophies.

The major issue with Trophies, as it stands, is the fact that the PlayStation Network has not succeeded in creating the feeling of a true online identity for its players. The rather alienating XMB and awkwardness of communication with other players makes it far more difficult for gamers to feel connected to their PSN handles than they do their Gamertags. A Gamertag, from the very start, has set out to feel like an identity, something that is tied into every Xbox 360 game they play, every Achievement they unlock, and every success they have in a multiplayer environment. It feels like something that is theirs. A PSN handle is simply what it is -- just a handle.

I've never felt any sort of attachment to my PSN handle, not like I do with the Xbox 360 Gamertag. Even visually, the Gamertag sets itself up as a more tangible object, resembling a card with your name, motto, Gamerscore and recently played games. Your PSN handle doesn't have that same tangibility, at least not one as clearly defined and visible to others as the Gamertag. On the Xbox 360, you can easily show off what you've been playing and what Achievements you've unlocked. With the PSN, there's no sense of personal investment and no real platform to show off your Trophy progress at an easy glance. The lack of identity makes Trophies far less important than Achievements.

Another major issue is the cumbersome PS3 interface and ridiculous load times. For such a magnificent, sleek and well-produced machine, its sluggish XMB feels archaic and inconvenient to use. For example, when unlocking an Achievement during a 360 game, all the player has to do is press the guide button on the Xbox 360 controller and instantly see the Achievement details. On the PS3, one has to press the guide button, navigate to the Trophy section, wait for the Trophies to load, then find the right Trophy through the list of small, barely legible text. The very act of looking at Trophies feels like a waste of time.

When a game is loading on the Xbox 360, I'll often fill the seconds by quickly glancing over some Achievements to check my progress, or look at some messages, which can instantly be done with a quick tap of the controller's Guide Button to bring up a useful mini dashboard. You can easily bring up the dashboard and pass time in there while waiting for the next level to load. Not so on the PS3. Usually, by the time you've actually navigated to the Trophies and waited for the information itself to load up, the game is ready to be played. There is no checking out other peoples' PSN IDs in a pre-match lobby either, not with the same ease and swiftness of an Xbox 360 lobby.

Even worse, and completely inexcusable to boot, is the fact that Trophies need to "sync" before you can view them on the XMB. I don't quite get how the Xbox 360 can have your Achievements all ready for you to glance over at any time, while you need to sit through a loading screen in order to look at anything PS3-related. On the 360, it's incredibly easy to compare your Achievements to others on your friends list. On the PS3, you have to spend your time watching little rotating circles as the PS3 sluggishly fires up the Trophies.

Another glaring fault is the fact that, unlike Achievements, very few Trophies actually carry with them a sense of value, arbitrary or otherwise. Every single Achievement feels like it's adding to this colossal E-Peen that grows with every Achievement you unlock. It's thoroughly meaningless, I fully admit that, but so is a lot of things in the world of gaming, and the mindless collection factor is addictive and adds to the fun of unlocking Achievements. Even the smallest and most insignificant of Achievements feels like it carries a "value" of sorts. 5G is still 5G, and those small Achievements all contribute to increasing that E-Peen's all-crucial size.

The Gamerscore, while accomplishing nothing of true value, at least stands as a testament to your history with the Xbox 360's game library, and quickly gives people a rough idea of how much quality time you've spent with the system. Every Achivement collected adds to that.

Not so with Trophies, that are split between Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Straight away, we are taught that only a few Trophies actually matter. Who cares about common Bronze Trophies? The way in which different values are assigned to the Trophies practically admits that a huge amount of them are worthless. Nearly all my Trophies so far are Bronze, and I struggle to give a shit about any of them, because we all know that Bronze is for losers. Unlike Achievements, which have an "every little helps" aura about them, the PlayStation Trophies don't feel like they work towards anything. Don't get me wrong, both Achievements and Trophies are, at the end of the day, meaningless tokens. Trophies, however, make it far too obvious to inspire anything but apathy.

Trophies also carry with them some "level up" system which I suppose is meant to rival the Gamerscore except it ... doesn't. It's rather senseless and just sits there, proving very little. While the idea of leveling up your PSN actually has potential, until it does more than simply sit buried in your profile with its thumb up its arse, it won't beat the Gamerscore.

Even the visual aspect of Trophies are unappealing. The "Achievement Unlocked" image has become almost iconic this generation, with its distinct sound and look becoming a welcome occurrence during the course of any 360 game. Sony's small, whimpering little gray box that announces, in tiny text, that "You've earned a Trophy" brings with it all the fanfare of an old lady's wet fart.

The interesting thing is, Sony has just as much opportunity, if not more so, the make Trophies stand out, thanks in part to the PSP, and this may be where Trophies might eventually justify their existence. There has been talk in the past about PSP games having their own Trophies, and if your PSN ID remains linked between both your PS3 and PSP, then we're definitely looking at something interesting. The ability to unlock these extra rewards across multiple platforms as well as multiple games is something that Microsoft simply does not have right now, and it's something Sony could definitely capitalize on in order to start steering the direction of a gamer's identity, rather than just follow in the footsteps of a rival.

Of course, the first thing Sony needs to do is make the that aforementioned identity something to identify with. Until that happens, Trophies will always mean very little compared to Achievements and the Gamerscore. Sony has a lot of games, several consoles and even social experiments like Home and LittleBigPlanet. However, everything right now feels disconnected from one another. The PlayStation brand has an incredibly amount of tools to make Trophy support something worth bragging about, but until it pulls the drawstrings and brings all of its separate parts together, the PSN experience is always going to feel like a step behind what the Xbox brand currently offers.

A greater sense of personality, a more convenient way to interact with your gaming rewards and a feeling, however false, that Trophies actually mean something. Sony could do all that and really go toe-to-toe with the idea of Gamertags. Unfortunately, until Sony realizes that just trying to mimic Achievements with the bare minimum of effort doesn't make for much competition, Trophies will remain quite the underachievement.

Killzone 2 Steel & Titanium Map Pack Review

Adding new maps to Killzone 2 is an exciting occasion. With such a well made original set of maps the idea of new maps is like opening a gift! Yet are these maps as good as the original maps? Is it too early to release downloadable content? Killzone 2 is only 2 months old and some the games original maps still feel new. Will these additional maps complement the original game or will it hurt the mystic of a game that's being called the first true Halo killer? Hopefully these maps continue to make Killzone 2 the must have game for the PlayStation 3.

PS3 to Dominate the Console Scene

Don Reisinger @ Cnet: "Sony representatives have consistently said that they have a "10-year plan" for the PlayStation 3. Sony's Kaz Hirai has said that that kind of lasting power is what the consumer really cares about.

But the idea of a "10-year life cycle" is a red herring. Sony made the same claims about the PlayStation 2, but released the PlayStation 3 six years into its predecessor's life cycle. Assuming Sony sticks to that same schedule, it's entirely possible that the PlayStation 4 will hit store shelves sometime in 2012--the very earliest point, according to Reeves, that the PlayStation 3 could be "dominant." If the PlayStation 3 is really on a 10-year plan, why should Sony release any console before that time is up?"

Playstation 3 Linux Tutorial

How to Turn Your PlayStation 3 Into a Linux PC

The Cell processor inside Sony's PlayStation 3 is a powerhouse that lets the gaming console render highly detailed graphics at blistering speed. That same chip gives the PS3 all the processing muscle it needs to become a fully functional computer. When we first heard this was possible, we were sure the procedure had to be illegal, or that it would at least void the warranty. But as it turns out, this is that rarest of finds in consumer electronics: a perfectly legal, manufacturer-supported hack that adds significant functionality. With a little bit of effort and expense, we turned a PS3 into a Linux computer—without losing any of the machine's native gaming goodness. And we'd like one of our readers to win it.

Step 1: Back Up

Sony hardly walks people through the conversion process—you've got to know where to look in the PS3's menus, and many of the steps can be a bit tricky. But the first procedure is a no-brainer—back up your data. That's a good idea before doing major tinkering with any PC, and it's especially smart with this project, which requires the installation of a second operating system and either reformatting or replacing the PS3's hard drive. The PlayStation's own OS won't disappear in the process (it's stored on flash memory), but saved games will be wiped clean, so it's critical to back them up. A backup command that works with any USB-connected external drive is built into the PS3 OS (it's under "System Settings"), but it will only back up saved game data. Other media files (music, video, etc.) need to be backed up manually.

Step 2: Upgrade Your Drive

PlayStation 3 ships with either a 40 or 80 GB drive. That's plenty of storage for games and could suffice for basic computing. But upgrading the hard drive on the PS3 is remarkably easy, so we saw it as a good excuse to bump up the storage capacity to a more PC-friendly level. The PS3 uses 2.5-in. laptop drives, and highcapacity replacements can be purchased from online retailers such as Newegg or Directron for $60 to $150. We went for Toshiba's capacious 250 GB—ample space for large movie, music and photo collections.

The drive is located behind a small removable panel on the side of the PS3 and can be replaced without too much muss and fuss. It is secured in a removable cage, which is held in place by one screw. The upgrade is similar to a drive replacement in a PC—old drive pops out, new drive pops in. When the console is turned on, the PS3 formats the new drive.

Step 3: Install Your New OS

This is where things get somewhat complicated. PS3 can't run Microsoft Windows or Apple's OS X but it can run Linux operating systems. There are many Linux varieties, but our favorite is Ubuntu. And it turns out that the open-source community has created a program called kboot that helps load Ubuntu onto the PS3.

To download an installation kit including both kboot and the Ubuntu OS, click right here. The file is an ISO, which can be burned to a CD or DVD to create a bootable disc with a program such as ImgBurn.

The first step in loading the new operating system is to create a drive partition. Select "System Settings," then "Format Utility" from the menu of the PS3. Choose "Custom" and allot 10 GB to the "Other OS." Choose "Quick Format," then restart.

Once the partition is made, the OS can be loaded from the Ubuntu disc using the "Install Other OS" function under "Settings" in the PS3 menu. This installs kboot, which allows the PS3 to install Ubuntu.

Switching between the PlayStation operating system and Ubuntu is not as straightforward as dual booting a standard PC. In fact, after installing the kboot file, you need to delve back into the PS3's System Menu to designate "Other OS" under "Default System" before the PS3 even installs the full Ubuntu OS. When you restart the PS3, plug a mouse and keyboard into the USB ports. (PlayStation controllers are good for gaming, but terrible for computing.) The console will boot using your Ubuntu disc and install the new system. (Expect it to take about an hour.)

With Ubuntu installed, you can use your PS3 to run programs such as OpenOffice for spreadsheets and word processing, Firefox for Web surfing and VLC for movie playback. In short, your console will be able to do anything a normal PC can do.

There is, however, a trick to getting back to the native PlayStation OS. To make the switch, reboot the console, and at the boot prompt, type "boot-os-game," then press Enter. This brings the PS3 back to game land.
